Moving Checklist

To help you think about all the things you need to do when moving home, we have prepared a handy check list for you.

Two Months Before the Move
  • Contact Wetherby Storage: Arrange van hire and book a removal firm.
  • Purchase Supplies: Buy boxes, packing materials, and storage supplies. Wetherby Storage have a great range of boxes, tape and packaging materials.
  • Sort Belongings: Declutter and donate or discard items you no longer need.
  • Start Packing: Begin with non-essential items.
  • Pet Arrangements: Book kennels or a cattery in advance if needed for your pets.
  • Consider Storage: Store excess furniture until you settle into your new home.
One Month Before the Move
  • Car Maintenance: If moving long-distance, service your car and check the tyres.
  • Register Locally: Find and register with local doctors and dentists in your new area.
  • Notify Local Council: Inform the council about your move and cancel council tax payments.
  • Update Service Providers: Let your phone and internet providers know your new address.
  • Notify the DVLA: Update your driver's license and vehicle information.
  • Contact Your Bank: Inform them of your address change.
  • Notify Inland Revenue: Update your details with the tax authorities.
  • Update Insurance: Ensure home insurance is in place for the moving day.
  • Confirm Moving Arrangements: Reconfirm dates and plans with the moving company.

Two Weeks Before the Move
  • Change of Address Notifications: Inform friends, online retailers, subscription services (e.g., milk, newspapers, magazines) about your new address.

  • Mail Redirection: Set up mail forwarding for at least three months.
One Week Before the Move
  • Check with Solicitors & Agents: Confirm that everything is on track with your solicitor and estate agent.
  • TV Licensing: Update your address with TV Licensing.
  • Finalise Packing: Ensure all packing is nearly complete, and check overlooked areas like the loft and garage.
  • Notify Neighbours: Ask them to ensure space for the moving van outside your home.
  • Prepare Appliances: Defrost and clean out your fridge/freezer.
  • Clear Kitchen Cupboards: Empty the cupboards and pack kitchen items.
  • Plan the Moving Route: Decide on the best route to your new home.
  • Remind Helpers: Remind friends or family who’ve offered to help on moving day.
  • Secure Valuables: Pack important documents and valuables in a safe place for the car.
The Day Before the Move
  • Charge Your Phone: Make sure your mobile is fully charged.
  • Prepare Practical Items: Set aside a clearly marked box with essentials like a tape measure, extension lead, step ladder, etc.
  • First Night Essentials: Pack a box with first-night necessities (check out the First Night Essentials Checklist for everything you might need).
  • Van or Moving Firm: Collect your hire van or confirm the schedule with your removal firm.
  • Move Boxes: If needed, move packed boxes to a downstairs room.
  • Secure Valuables Again: Keep important documents and valuables ready for the car.
Moving Day Tasks
  • Record Meter Readings: Take photos of your water, electricity, and gas meters, and inform utility providers of your move.
  • Strip Beds & Curtains: Pack them into clearly labeled bags.
  • Check Bathrooms: Ensure all toiletries are packed.
  • Direct Movers: Clearly instruct movers on what items are being moved and what stays.
  • Final House Check: Double-check all rooms and do a final clean.
  • Leave Keys: Hand over all keys as per the arrangement with the new owner.
